Renee’s connection to service has been lived through decades of steady, compassionate presence within higher education. As a Pacific University staff member for 27 years, she has walked alongside Veteran students and their families as they navigate one of the most significant transitions of their lives — beginning and completing a college education.
Her understanding of service is rooted in action and compassion. For her, service means providing the tools Veteran students need to be successful and ensuring they do not feel alone as they navigate military benefits and academic requirements. She knows firsthand how daunting the benefits process can be, especially when layered with coursework, family responsibilities, and life transitions. Helping students and their parents understand these systems so they can focus on academics is not just part of her job — it is deeply fulfilling.
Renee speaks with pride about watching students cross the stage at graduation. Knowing she lent a hand, listened when it mattered, and made herself available during uncertain moments fills her with gratitude. The trust that students and families place in her humbles her, and she remains deeply appreciative of the kindness and generosity Veteran students consistently show.
Throughout her journey, she has sought continued support and growth by attending Veteran conferences, participating in trainings, and engaging in conversations with colleagues and friends. She understands that serving well requires continued learning and connection.
Her message to others in similar roles is clear and practical: be passionate about the service you provide, listen carefully, and make yourself truly available. Service is not only about big gestures — it is about steady presence, compassion, and helping others move forward.
She reflects that she has learned and grown tremendously through her work with Veterans and their families. Playing even a small part in their journeys is something she considers a privilege.
